McCain Courts the Religious Wrong

NPR--Sen. Brownback Says McCain Must Woo Evangelicals

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), voice for conservative evangelicals in the Senate, is national co-chair of the John McCain campaign, the head of Catholics for McCain, and co-chair of McCain's Judicial Advisory Committee. Brownback's job is to try and persuade evangelical voters that McCain is conservative enough to meet their needs despite his "maverick" label. Abortion, is THE wedge issue for evangelicals. They seek to overturn Roe and criminalize abortions. Brownback says that McCain needs to talk more religion to "show the country more of his heart" and that his excuse why McCain hasn't done more of this is that he "comes from a generation and a time that doesn't talk about these issues that much."

I prefer a candidate who talks about the issues, the issues of the economy, energy, the environment, and the WAR. Unfortunately, religious rhetoric and moving the debate towards faith based issues is the only way conservative Republicans know how to win and it does nothing for improving the nation's economy, energy situation, environment, or the WAR. It is simply a win-at-all-costs maneuver. Brownback's prominant role in McCain's campaign is yet another reason not to vote for McCain.
