Carpooling
For those who live outside the reach of public transportation, carpooling is an appealing alternative to the solo drive to work. Commuters take turns driving to work or money is exchanged for the cost of fuel. It benefits the driver, the passengers, and everyone on the road because it is cheaper, it allows the passengers to relax (eat breakfast, read the paper, etc.), reduces air pollution, and reduces traffic congestion. Larger cities like San Francisco and Houston have encouraged carpooling by designating carpooling lanes on highways. Missoula, MT offers a Vanpool for five or more passengers. The Missoula Ravalli Transportation Management Association supplies the van, passengers pay per mile they ride, and the driver rides for free. Companies, universities, governments, and cities now offer incentive programs such as free parking, preferred parking, and reward programs to promote carpooling. Now that you've got your carpool buddy, there's only one question: Rock, Country, or Talk Radio?
