The Definition of a Sportsman (1 of 7)

What does it mean to be a sportsman? Ask people and you will find that the definition varies with the individual. To one, it refers to someone who is serious about hunting and fishing. To another, it describes a person who is fond of hiking and the outdoors. To a third, it may just be someone interested in athletics. All are valid. But for some people the term takes on more significance. With the title of Sportsman comes a code of ethical conduct, a responsibility to protect the animals and the environment, and the duty to hand down this ideology from one generation to the next. For these few, the title of Sportsman is earned.

Over the next few days, let us look at what it means to be a sportsman and try to dispel some of the conflict between some groups and sporting men. We’ll look at the evolution of a sportsman, a sportsman’s ethics, the sportsman as an environmentalist, the sportsman as an animal activist, and the sportsman’s responsibilities. Please read, share, and evaluate your own definition of what it is to be a sportsman.

Don't forget sporting women! Nice picture. I'll post more soon on this topic.

I use "men or women" and "he or she" at times. I don't mean to exclude anyone, but writing "he or she" all the time just sounds muttled. Take me at my word that I am including women when I write "sportsmen". Thanks for bringing that point up, though.

Hey Francis,

Were was the shot taken? Lets go fishing! It is funny the some sport"people" forget that they need to protect the resource in order to enjoy it! Anyway, enough about gun rights lets spend some money and time protecting the resources.

Amen flycaster! I do believe that most hunters and fisherman do care about the resources they use when they hunt, fish, and hike, but they tend to forget about the environment if tough decisions might affect their income or ease of living. People just need to be reminded every once in awhile that the outdoors are not just our playground.

As far as the photo... Yes, it was beautiful spot, but I'm not giving up the location.
