New York Times--Evangelicals Are Still Wary Despite McCain's Outreach
We're still talking about the evangelical base as a political force nearly eight years after we got it wrong the first time, four years after we got it wrong the second time. You'd think with the state of America, the nation's voters would be focused on the economy, the War, and energy. But I guess there are those people out there (Falwell, Dobson, Robertson) that still think the government's main focus should be on the social wedge issues of abortion, same-sex marriage, and stem-cell research. Here we go again! But luckily, McCain is not cut from the same cloth as our current president. He is more moderate on these issues (and definitely more cerebral). Unfortunately, as he continues to court right wing evangelicals, he will continue to shed any respect he had curried from the middle. With Barack Obama and John McCain we can't make the same mistake a third time. I only wish McCain was the guy we elected eight years ago and four years ago.
